Kevin M. Fickenscher, M.D., CPE, FACPE, FAAFP holds a wide range of healthcare leadership experiences in the care delivery, vendor, policy, and association sectors. He currently serves as the Founder and Chairman of FirstCARE, a comprehensive telecare initiative; and, CREO Strategic Solutions, LLC – a consultancy offering strategic advisory services related to healthcare with a specific focus on technology applications, informatics, telecare services and leadership/team development. In the last decade, he served as the Director for Biomedical Innovation and Healthcare Strategy and the Technical Director for the Center for Transforming Health at the MITRE Corporation;
the interim Chief Medical Officer with AMC Health; and, as the President/CEO of AMIA – the leading association of healthcare informaticiansinvolved in transforming the industry through the analytics and the creation of knowledge.
Previously, Dr. Fickenscher has served in a variety of domestic and international positions for Dell Healthcare Services (NASDAQ: DELL); and, Perot Systems prior to its acquisition by Dell in November 2009. As the Perot Chief
Medical Officer, he developed and led the healthcare consulting practice; and, served as the head of International health care operations based in London. He has also previously served in the care delivery sector as the Chief
Medical Officer for Catholic Healthcare West (now Dignity Health) based in California and Aurora Health Care based in Wisconsin. Early in his career, he held academic roles as an Assistant Dean with Michigan State University; and, as the Founding Director for the University of North Dakota Center for Rural Health – a nationally renowned
research, policy and services center focused on rural healthcare.
Dr. Fickenscher is a recognized physician executive leader with extensive experience in strategic and operational development in complex healthcare organizations. He is considered a thought leader related to health and health care technology, telecare, information management and leadership. He holds extensive experience in organizational transformation, physician management, health policy analysis, clinical quality and resource/care
management. He is also recognized as a dynamic, visionary leader in healthcare throughout the world. He has consistently been ranked among the Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare. He regularly participates in discussions and debates related to the future of healthcare, including testimony before Congress and various international healthcare forums. Among his other accomplishments, he has been a Regional White House Fellow finalist , a Kellogg National Fellow , an Emerging Leader in Healthcare , Health Advisor to the 1988 Biden for President Campaign; and, Advisor on the Clinton Healthcare Task Force.
Dr. Fickenscher graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in 1978 and trained in Family Practice and subsequently obtained his Board-Certification in 1982. He is a Certified Physician Executive and Fellow
with both the American College of Physician Executives and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He received his certification in Coaching and Leadership Development from Georgetown University in the Spring, 2016
in his pursuit to augment his individual and team coaching support work focused on the health care industry. He recently published a book on leadership – Toto’s Reflections: The Leadership Lessons from The Wizard of Oz – a
book that uses the story of Oz as a metaphor for lessons in leadership. He speaks widely and frequently throughout the world on various topics including the future of healthcare, the application of technology for driving efficiency
and effectiveness in care delivery; and, the important role of leadership in fostering and supporting needed changes in the health care industry.
